What are the benefits of stair climbing? Is it a good workout to get bigger legs and butt?
Would stair climbing help make my chicken legs bigger and butt? If so how long should i do this for a day?
Stair Climbing is hard as it is both aerobic and anaerobic…like skiing.
During anaerobic activities, fat burning shuts down because it’s very intense and you could never get enough oxygen to process fat cells. Your body has to use blood sugar, which is why you need to eat about two hours before so you get enough energy.
You could have strong quads (front of the thighs), hamstrings (back of the thighs) gluteus (buttocks) and calves muscles if you do weight training (door squats, lunges, leg extensions, butt/hip extension, pelvic lifts, heel raises…) but lack cardiovascular health and stamina if you’re not doing enough aerobics.
You could have a strong cardiovascular system (heart, lungs, circulatory system) if you’re doing a lot of cardio but lack the muscle mass to be able to lift your whole body up each step easily if you do not do enough weight training.
Once you get enough muscle mass in your legs and butt with weight training (takes 2 to 3 months) AND you get a good cardiovascular system doing a lot of aerobics (also takes a couple of months), then you’re ready to combine the two and climb stairs, as a way to multitasking and maintain muscle mass (use it or lose it) and cardiovascular health.
I would not say to a person with chicken legs and butt…”Go skiing”. I would say, do weight training and aerobics for 3 months, and then go skiing…or walk up the Eiffel Tower or the Empire State Building.

John Cunningham Climbing Ben Nevis 1976
Rare footage by Yvon Chouinard, initially created for National Geographic featuring John Cunningham Climbing an unspecified climb on Ben Nevis.
No permission was granted to put this up, but I felt this is footage that shoud be shared with people. If the creators are unhappy with this then I can take it down.
A few points of interest …
The ‘climb’ is actually a montage of different shots, I’m not sure the exact climbs, but my best guesses, based on the forum posts that have gone up, and an email are that the initial shot zooming in is Zero gulley (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URgg1wFQ8cg ), except that the shot has been reversed for some reason. The middle section, with the avalance is possibly Garadh Gully
page 189 of Creaagh Dhu Climber
“part of the film was supposed to be fictional,” says Chouinard, with John playing a hard case from a rundown part of Glasgow. He rides on his motorbike across Rannoch moor, solos something and then slips and falls but no-one knows if it is real or imagined, it was kinda surreal. The film never got to be seen because in another section, filmed in China , half the film crew were caught in a terrible avalanche. The director was killed and I broke a couple of ribs.”
Chouinard also mentions the filming in his ‘Climbing ice’ book (page 157 in the original 1978 version). He mentions being avalanched near Comb Buttress, by a cornice collapse on Number Two gully.
The ferry crossing is actually the corran ferry, but probably made to look lik ethe bally one. the bally ferry closed in 75 as the bridge opened, so I guess it was a substitute to make the movie look like it was set in an earlier time.
Cheers to anyone who has discussed this vid.

Can I Support Climbing Grape Ivy that fell in a rainstorm?
We have beautiful Climbing grape ivy that, until very hard rain hit last night, was wonderful climbing up our stucco house (2 stories). This morning we were devastated to see it had "peeled" off the house. It is still alive. Is there anything I could do to tack it back up?
I don’t see how you can get it back on the house. But buy a trellis or some other structure and tie it up with cable ties or the ties made for plants. Put this structure close to the house and maybe some of the new growth will climb back up the stucco.

101 Rock Climbing Tips and Tricks

Product DescriptionThis book is for climbers who have a handle on the basics (i.e., they know how to belay and rappel) and are looking for ways to climb better and more efficiently. Beginning and intermediate climbers will find a lot of useful information in these tips and even advanced climbers will likely find some new tricks to implement.
In this book are 101 rock climbing tips that the author wrote over a period of two years for a now-defunct rock climbing blog, and which are now exclusively available again for the first time. The tips are based on the experiences of the author, who has been climbing for more than 16 years and has established over 200 new routes, including the second longest sport climb in the United States.
The 101 rock climbing tips are broken into the following 9 categories:
• Essential climbing tips (17 tips)
• General climbing tips (12 tips)
• Sport climbing tips (6 tips)
• Trad climbing tips (15 tips)
• Multi-pitch tips climbs (14 tips)
• Gear tips (23 tips)
• Training and downtime tips (5 tips)
• Rappelling tips (5 tips)
• Other tips (4 tips)
Included in the book are 31 photos and illustrations to help explain and clarify the text.
Here are a few examples of the kinds of tips and tricks you can expect to find in the book:
#3 – Should you practice falling?
#8 – 9 ways to climb better without even trying
#18 – How to read a route in 6 steps
#29 – 9 tips for getting over your Climbing plateau
#36 – What’s the best way to start trad climbing?
#52 – 6 things to consider before doing a multi-pitch route
#65 – 6 ways to score cheap gear
#59 – The $2 climbing knife
#78 – How to jumpstart a car with climbing gear
#79 – The chalk funnel
#87 – 16 things to do with an old rope
And there’s a lot more where that came from.
All of the tips and tricks are written in a conversational style that is far removed from the boring, textbookish language used in most instructional climbing literature.
This book is 26,000+ words in length.
